Guys have a reputation for being insecure about their penises. But is that true, or just a stereotype? Well, the first nationally representative study on how guys feel about their junk just came out and we have our answer.
The study, published in Archives of Sexual Behavior, got both rather vague and super specific. It asked 3,996 American men ages 18 to 65 to rank 14 aspects of their penises' appearance on a scale from 1 to 7. And guess what. They actually weren't all that displeased. Overall, 86 percent of guys were satisfied with their penises.
But the rankings depended on which features they were talking about: 64 percent liked the shape of the head, 62 percent were O with whether or not they were circumcised, and 61 percent thought their erections were wide enough.
However, as you might predict, the most insecurities were related to size: 27 percent of men were unhappy with the size of their soft penis, 19 percent wished their erect penises were longer, and 15 percent wanted greater girth.(sex advice)
There were also quite a few random factors guys had no opinion on, because they don't really think about them at all. They felt pretty neutral, for example, on their veins, color, and the amount of pubic hair they were rockin'.
Weirdly, guys who were less satisfied with their penises had more active sex lives. Are they perhaps overcompensating? We have know idea, since the survey just asked the question and didn't really dive into causation or analysis. It's up to us to wonder.
Of course, this doesn't mean men don't have body image issues related to their junk. The good news, though, is that 40.3 percent of women prefer average-size penises. Porn might sometimes tell a different story, but it's nice to know guys aren't all buying it.
